We believe that Education is one of the most powerful drivers of development and one of the greatest instruments in reducing poverty, raising incomes, promoting economic growth and shared prosperity and for improving health, gender, equality, peace and stability.

Deaf Girls Education Foundation (DGEF) is a Non-Governmental organization founded and registered on 13th October, 2015 with the NGOs- Coordination Board, Registration number OP.218/051/15-160/9988.

It was founded by the first Deaf female Mandela Washington Fellows who are both Deaf educators and passionate on the plight of the Deaf Girl Child who has been a subject of neglect, sexual abuse and denied access to educational opportunities.

DGEF is national based, Education and Development oriented covering the republic of Kenya including but not limited to the following counties; Kisumu, Garissa, Wajir, Nairobi, Uasin Gishu and Turkana.

To see an inclusive society where Deaf Girls (and boys) are empowered educationally and economically to realize their full potential.

Our Mission

DGEF endeavors to build up a community of Determined, Resilient, Empowered, Mentored and Safe Deaf girls (and boys) through Education and Economic Empowerment.

Main Goal

To increase access to educational opportunities and economic empowerment for Deaf Girls.

Objectives

  • To empower Deaf Girls and their parents on social and economic matters.
  • To unite Deaf Women and Girls for purpose of advocating for their rights.
  • To sensitize institutions to educate Deaf Girls on HIV/AIDS, sexual reproductive health and risks.
  • To mentor Deaf Girls and in turn mold them to mentor other Deaf Girls.
  • To raise funds for educational scholarships and enter into partnership with other organizations providing scholarships to bright needy students.

Our Achievements

Despite being a year old, we have successfully carried out mentorship events in three schools for the Deaf in Kenya, contributed towards successful planning of the international Deaf Awareness week, 2016, Mobilized a team of Deaf Mentors for the Mentorship Programs, and involved in facilitating two Leadership Camps for Deaf Girls and Boys.
